Dadly Daily Declaration

Tuesday, December 18, 2018

Today’s Dadly Daily Declaration comes from Chapter 8 (titled Eat A Weird Lunch) of Aubrey Marcus‘ book, Own The Day, Own Your Life.  This chapter focuses on your lunch.  As Marcus writes in this chapter, “Lunch is an opportunity to reframe and restart your day.  It’s not an obligation to cross off the list.  It’s also an opportunity to get your body the micronutrients it needs to keep you feeling great.  The way to do that isn’t with something ordered off a cart. It’s by experimenting and exploring.”

Marcus explains why it’s important to eat a weird lunch: “With an estimated 75% of the world’s food produced from only twelve plant and five animal species, the lack of biodiversity in our diet is failing to support our “second brain.”  Additionally, our culture’s maniacal focus on calories instead of nutrients has left our bodies unbalanced and undernourished. When it comes to the midday meal, the typical lunch is often packed with what I call anti nutrients, and far too few of the essential micronutrients you get when you eat weird foods in all colors of the rainbow from fertile, mineral-rich soil…That $5 foot-long you’ve been eating every day is a $5 f*ckup.

Marcus also continues with his Universal Nutrition Principles:

  1. Calories are bullshit, Macronutrients matter
    1. Build your house wit proteins
    2. Go slow and steady on fibers
    3. Avoid carbohydrates
    4. Fuel your day with fats
    5. You are what you eat
  2. Eat Weird Foods
    1. Use microbiome-assistive foods to own your afternoon
    2. Utilize protective foods
    3. Consume vitamin- and mineral-rich foods
  3. Go to war with antinutrients
    1. Avoid trans fats and vegetable oils
    2. Avoid fried or burned foods

Also contained in this chapter are 7 recipes for weird lunches to help you own your afternoon.  One such recipe is a Chipotle Beef Bowl, listed below:

Time to prep: 5 minutes

Time to cook: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil
  • 1 cup seasonal organic peppers, sliced
  • 1 small organic yellow onion, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon chipotle seasoning blend
  • 6 ounces grass-fed Root + Holler ground beef
  • Sea salt
  • Black pepper
  • 1/2 cup organic broccoli sprouts
  • 1/4 cup fresh organic cilantro, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons whole-milk Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup pico de gallo
  1. Heat the avocado oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the peppers and onion, and sauté for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to get soft.
  2. Add the chipotle seasoning blend and beef. Lower the heat to medium and cook, stirring often, until the beef is no longer pink (7-10 minutes).
  3. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  4. Serve over the broccoli sprouts, and top with the cilantro, yogurt, and pico.

All of this leads to today’s Dadly Daily Declaration, which is:

Lunch is important not only for the body but also for the mind. But it doesn’t have to be a wrestling match with yourself. Make eating weird foods a game, take some of the pressure off.  The world is full of awesome food, so stop thinking about what you can’t have and get excited about what you can.
