Today’s Dadly Daily Declaration comes from Chapter 7 (titled Doin’ Work) of Aubrey Marcus‘ book, Own The Day, Own Your Life. This chapter focuses on your work and how to own your workday. As Marcus writes, we are built for work. Work is part of the balance of life, and however you define it, you will always have work to do.
Marcus continues, “To derive as much meaning, pleasure, and value of of this inescapably part of life as possible, you need to know your mission. Then you need to own your workspace, and work as effectively as possible. Because what makes work feel less like labor is when you know why you are doing it, and how to do it well.”
As Marcus states in this chapter, the worst thing in the world is to feel like you are getting owned by your job or your employer. So, he gives a three part formula to own your profession and be happy at work. The formula is below:
- Have an Implacable Mission
- Your mission is your purpose
- Own Your Space
- Control the smell in or around your workspace by using essential oils
- Punctuate your day with proper posture
- Be a good teammate
- Work Effectively
- Get into a rhythm with easy housekeeping tasks, then go hard on the mast important thing on your to-do list
- Prioritize emails then respond or don’t; answer only those that are the most important or urgent to you
- Start with the most challenging task of the day first.
- Learn to say no to those making demands on your time and energy that do not service your mission
- Block out distractions
- Get into a rhythm with easy housekeeping tasks, then go hard on the mast important thing on your to-do list
All of this leads to today’s Dadly Daily Declaration, which is:
Embrace the grind. Once you embrace the grind, whatever your grind may be, you realize the grind isn’t so bad. It is never the pain that is the problem, it is the suffering caused by the resistance to that pain. So, when you approach the workday today, you can power through just like you always have or you can do it better. You have a choice. You have questions to ask yourself that only you can answer. Can you support your body while getting shit done? Can you optimize your workflow to accomplish even more? Can you embrace the grind? Can you make it better for your team? That is owning it. You’re not at work to fuck around. You’re at work to do work. Go, hero, go!
