Dadly Daily Declaration

Friday, December 21, 2018

Today’s Dadly Daily Declaration comes from Chapter 11 (titled Reset and Reconnect) of Aubrey Marcus‘ book, Own The Day, Own Your Life.  This chapter focuses on your time after work, the transition from the thing that you do for money to the person that you are.

Marcus argues that we need to think about the initial period when you come home as a way of disconnecting both from work and from the stuff in your day that you’ve been working for.  There is always more to do in service of your goals, but you have to give yourself permission to enjoy this break you’ve earned, Marcus posits.  Marcus recommends using this time to:

  1. Connect with yourself
    1. Play an instrument
    2. If you want to get high, now’s the time (glass of wine, marijuana)
  2. Connect with your Tribe
    1. Listen to Music
    2. Get Silly and play
    3. Play with your pets
    4. Be with your kids and family

Marcus continues with a small blurb about the top five deathbed regrets, as contained in a book by palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware.  The three that stood out to Marcus include:

  • I wish I hadn’t worked so hard
  • I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends
  • I wish that I had let myself be happier

This leads us to today’s Dadly Daily Declaration:

We can become addicted to accumulating things, chasing goals, and being productive.  Killing it. Crushing it. But you know what feels better? Owning it. Owning the joy, love, and laughter that true connection can bring to our lives.  We have to choose to play. Choose to connect. Choose to be happy.  Sometimes it comes wafting through the air like a unicorn’s fart. And sometimes you gotta go where the unicorns are eating their magical beans, and start sniffing.
