Today’s Dadly Daily Declaration comes from Chapter 14 (titled Turn Off, Tune In) of Aubrey Marcus‘ book, Own The Day, Own Your Life. This chapter focuses on unplugging, recharging, and giving a gift to your mind, body and spirit.
In this chapter, Marcus gives advice on removing ourselves from our devices: our phones, tablets, game consoles, TV’s, and computers. Though his advice and how-to’s may seem deceptively simple, Marcus writes, you will suffers some withdrawal when you start the process.
Because this book is written in a sequential manner to own your day, this chapter and its how-to’s are intended to happen at night. So, after the best sex of your life, it’s time to turn it all off. First step is to put your phone on airplane mode, DND, or simply shut it off. Marcus writes that this I’m important because we need to clear the static from your mental channels and reduce our anxiety load. Part of owning your day is giving your brain time to recharge its batteries.
To fill that time when you once solved puzzles, scanned Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, Marcus recommends two improvements:
- Journaling
- This is a 2 part process
- First, write down your mission and three main objectives for the next day
- Second, proceed to more cathartic or free-style journaling; organize your thoughts and make sense of the non-sensical
- This is a 2 part process
- Enjoy “Cuddle Time”
- Spend time with people you care about most, even if that’s just yourself
- Play non-video games, like board games or Cards Against Humanity
- Enjoy an episode of your favorite television show
- Read a book that takes your mind away
- Optimize your personal care
- Brushing, flossing, washing your face, taking a bath, etc
- Spend time with people you care about most, even if that’s just yourself
All of this leads us to today’s Dadly Daily Declaration:
Whatever comes, you can deal with it. You will deal with it. Fight that battle if it comes.
Until then, do not play war games in your mind and in your heart every night. Find a strategy that works for you and put your stress away, at least for a few hours.
Be grateful that life is the kind of chef that doesn’t pander to our sweet tooth. It serves up bitter and salty meals that keep us hale and hearty, and every once in a while it gives us the chocolate cake. You aren’t going to be able to fully control what’s on tomorrow’s menu, but everything life has served you so far has made you the person you are today. Own that thought, and tell your stress that it can go fuck itself.
